-------------------------------------------------------- 3. Models for the New Millennium: A CEDAR/GEM Initiative -------------------------------------------------------- From: Maura Hagan (hagan@jabba.hao.ucar.edu) Dick Wolf (wolf@alfven.rice.edu) ANNOUNCING... Models for the New Millennium A CEDAR/GEM Initiative A series of interactive discussions will take place during the CEDAR and GEM workshops, which will be held consecutive weeks in Colorado in June. We hope to formulate a plan for a Chapman Conference on this topic and to develop a proposal to submit to AGU. The focus will be the identification of challenges anticipated in the further development of large-scale numerical models, including assimilative models, of the magnetosphere, ionosphere, thermosphere, and middle atmosphere. During each session a small number of invited speakers will briefly overview the state-of-the-art in modelling these regimes and identify key areas that should be addressed to motivate workshop discussion. Workshop participants should come prepared to address any relevant topic. These may involve, but are not limited to, scientific objectives, observational constraints on models, parameterization of sub-grid-scale effects, the evolution of computer architectures, and emerging numerical techniques. At the CEDAR Workshop in Boulder, the session on this topic is scheduled for 1 to 3 pm on Friday, June 12. At the GEM Workshop in Snowmass, the relevant sessions are scheduled for 10:15-12:00 and 1:30-2:30 on Monday, June 15. Information about the CEDAR and GEM Workshops can be obtained from the appropriate web pages: http://www.hao.ucar.edu/public/research/tiso/cedar/98/conf98.html or http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/workshop.html If you would like to be included in a new mailing list for the CEDAR/GEM Initiative, please contact Maura Hagan at the email address given below. If you would like to make a prepared contribution at one of the sessions, please contact either Maura Hagan (CEDAR session) or Dick Wolf (GEM sessions).
