The purpose of this Conference is to synthesize the vast amount of new information that has been obtained from both observational and theoretical studies of the magnetotail and to generate a strategy for further research. The Conference will consist of the following four sessions: (1) structure of the magnetotail: tail magnetopause and the boundary layer, IMF dependence of the structure, origin of the plasma sheet, and entry of the solar particles, (2) acceleration and heating in the magnetotail: reconnection and neutral-sheet acceleration, field-aligned acceleration, wave-particle interactions, and shock acceleration, (3) plasmoid, flux rope, and substorm : formation and development of the 3-d plasmoid, role in the substorm phenomena, spectra of the accelerated plasma, coupling to the nighttime ionosphere, and particle injection to the radiation belt, and (4) IACG summary. The conference will start at 9:00 on Nov 5, and end at 16:00 on Nov 9. After the completion of the Conference on Nov 9 you can move to Tokyo or Osaka either by plane or train so as to depart on the morning of Nov 10.
