--------------------------------------------- 2. SPECIAL SESSION SH01 AT SPRING AGU MEETING --------------------------------------------- From: Gerard Van Hoven (VANHOVEN@vmsa.oac.uci.edu) AGU/SH01 - THE GENERATION OF SOLAR ACTIVITY: INTERACTION OF SIMULATIONS WITH MEASUREMENTS In recent years there has been great progress in numerical simulation of the physical processes believed to be central to understanding solar structure and activity. Dynamic three-dimensional simulation has become a powerful tool for investigating important solar phenomena such as the magnetic dynamo, solar convection, coronal heating, and magnetic activity. In conjunction with the advances in dynamic simulations, there has been considerable progress in high resolution measurements of the Sun's surface and atmosphere from ground-based observatories and from space-based instrumentation such as Yohkoh. We expect that data of even higher resolution and accuracy will soon be available from SOHO, TRACE and SOLAR-B. With the advent of massively-parallel processors, we also expect that simulations will make great progress in the next few years, with realistic and comprehensive models being developed that can lead to forecasting capabilities. Hence, it is now timely to address the issue of the comparison between the diagnostics available from simulations and measurements. This session will engage both solar observers and plasma theorists in order to exchange information on the latest results from models and experiments, and to lay the groundwork for an effective integration of future measurements and simulations. Invited Speakers: *THE STRUCTURE AND DYNAMICS OF THE LARGE-SCALE SOLAR CORONA Zoran Mikic and Jon Linker *THE EVOLUTION OF LARGE-SCALE MAGNETIC FIELDS ON THE SUN David Sime *THEORY AND SIMULATION OF MAGNETIC RECONNECTION IN THE SOLAR ATMOSPHERE Spiro Antiochos *YOHKOH OBSERVATIONS: MAGNETIC RECONNECTION IN THE SOLAR CORONA Richard Canfield *SOLAR CONVECTIVE TURBULENCE AND THE EVOLUTION OF MAGNETIC FIELDS Robert Rosner and Fausto Cattaneo *HIGH-RESOLUTION OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES OF SOLAR CONVECTION AND MAGNETIC FIELDS Alan Title *THEORETICAL STUDIES OF SOLAR CONVECTION AND DIFFERENTIAL ROTATION Juri Toomre and Ellen Zweibel *HELIOSEISMIC PROBING OF SOLAR INTERIOR STRUCTURE AND FLOWS Philip Scherrer Conveners: Gerard Van Hoven Spiro Antiochos Department of Physics Code 7675 University of California Naval Research Lab Irvine, CA 92717 Washington, DC 20375 T: 714-824-5145 202-767-6199 F: 714-824-5903, -2174 202-404-7997 E: vanhoven@vmsa.oac.uci.edu santiochos@solar.stanford.edu This session is planned to span 1 1/2 days, the first day to include a set of complementary invited talks covering simulations and experiments, as listed above, along with a number of contributed papers. The second half day will be devoted to poster presentations. The conveners and speakers invite your participation, both by paper submission and through spirited discussion. When you submit a paper for this session (SH01), in time for the 3/9/95 abstract deadline, please direct a copy to the conveners. Thanks. The most recent Highlights Program and Call for Papers [with abstract format] appeared in Eos on 10 January.
