---------------------------------- 2. CHAPMAN CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT ---------------------------------- From: Rob Pfaff (U6RFP@lepvax.gsfc.nasa.gov) Measurement Techniques for Space Plasmas: What Works and What Doesn't Convenors: Joseph E. Borovsky, Los Alamos National Laboratory Robert F. Pfaff, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center CONFERENCE PURPOSE AND TOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED: Space physics research is largely driven by space-based measurements. A correct interpretation of these measurements requires not only an understanding of the physics of what is being measured, but also an understanding of the experimental techniques used to obtain the data. At this conference, physicists will gather to critically discuss the in-situ measurement techniques that are currently in use and to discuss where alternative and additional techniques are needed. Typically, issues about the validity of such measurement techniques are not addressed in the literature and the documentation of the principles behind several instrument principles is poor. The conference will be limited to measurement techniques of space plasma physics -- including plasmas of the middle atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere of the Earth and other planets, as well as that of the solar wind. The sessions of the conference will be largely focussed on the fundamental plasma parameters for which measurements are essential to make progress in the field of Space Physics. These parameters are listed below, followed by the name of the organizing committee member who will be responsible for organizing papers on the given topic: Electric Fields (Goran Marklund, Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden) (Tel: 46-8-790-7695; Fax: 46-8-24-54-31; E-mail: marklund@plasma.kth.se) Magnetic Fields (Chris Russell, University of California at Los Angeles Tel: 310-825-3188; Fax: 310-206-3051; E-mail: ctrussell@igpp.ucla.edu) High-Energy Particles (Ted Fritz, Boston University Tel: 617-353-5990; Fax: 617-353-6463; E-mail: fritz@buasta.bu.edu) Low-Energy Particles (Jean-Jacques Berthelier, CRPE, Saint Maur, France Tel: 33-1-45114200; Fax: 33-1-48894433; E-mail: jean-jacques.berthelier@cetp.ipsl.fr) Thermal Plasma (Rod Heelis, University of Texas, Dallas Tel: 214-690-2822; Fax: 214-690-2761; E-Mail: heelis@utdallas.edu) Plasma Waves (Jim LaBelle, Dartmouth College Tel: 603-646-2973; Fax: 603-646-1446; E-mail: jlabelle@einstein.dartmouth.edu) Neutral Atom Imaging (Tom Moore, Marshall Space Flight Center Tel: 205-544-7633; Fax: 205-544-5244; E-mail: mooret@mpb.msfc.nasa.gov) Miniaturization/On-board Processing (Dave Young, Southwest Research Inst. Tel: 512-522-2743; Fax: 512-647-4325; E-mail: dave@swri.space.swri.edu) Each paper that presents instrument techniques will be asked to discuss the drawbacks of each technique, as well as its advantages. Theorists and modelers are encouraged to attend to articulate which plasma parameter measurements are critically lacking and most urgently needed. Students are encouraged to attend. Travel Funds have been secured to help offset their expenses. (Students should apply to AGU for these funds by December 16, 1994 at the address given below.) An AGU Monograph from the Conference is anticipated. Sponsors include: Space Physics Division, NASA HQ; IGPP, Univ. of Calif. at Los Angeles. Deadline for submitting an abstract and for travel support: December 16, 1994 The abstract format is the same as the standard AGU size for their annual meetings. There is no submittal fee. Only these three questions need be answered on the right hand side of the abstract: (1) List the name of the Chapman Conference to which the abstract is being submitted. (2) Do you prefer an oral or poster presentation? (3) Full Name, Address, Telephone, Fax number, and E-mail address Abstracts should be submitted to: American Geophysical Union Space Plasma Measurement Techniques Chapman Conference 2000 Florida Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20009 (USA) The conference will take place in the Picacho Plaza Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Preliminary Program and Housing/Registration Information will be mailed by January 23, 1995. Deadline for Housing and Registration is March 2, 1995.
