JOB ANNOUNCEMENT-RESEARCH ASSISTANTS AT QUEEN MARY AND WESTFIELD COLLEGE --------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Steve Schwartz (S.J.Schwartz@qmw.ac.uk) Positions Available Research Assistants in Space Plasmas Astronomy Unit Queen Mary and Westfield College A number of vacancies exist at post-doctoral level covering a range of aspects within space plasmas, including data analysis of in situ spacecraft observations, numerical simulations and other theoretical work, and preparation for the forthcoming four-spacecraft mission Cluster. Successful applicants would normally contribute to a subset of this spectrum of activities. The group is currently analyzing particle and field data from the AMPTE mission. Numerical simulations and other theoretical work study the kinetic aspects of the Earth's outer magnetosphere. The group is playing a central role in the UK's data handling for Cluster, including the development of a UK Science Analysis System for manipulating and displaying multi-instrument multi-spacecraft data from Cluster, due to be launched toward the end of 1995. Applicants should hold a PhD in Physics, Astronomy, Space Plasmas or a related field with a background in plasmas and a record of originality in research. A subset of computational, data analysis and theoretical skills are required, along with the ability to provide independent initiative within a team effort. The appointment is for two years from 1 January 1995 or later. Salary is in the range 16,075-23,087 inclusive depending on age and experience.
