The JUNO mission to Jupiter has been selected for Phase A study [Richard Thorne; CoI]. Dawn mission to Asteroids 4 Vesta and 1 Ceres confirmed for implementation and launch in June, 2006. A volume on the 2001 Mars Odyssey mission, edited by C. T. Russell, has been published by Kluwer. The final two volumes on the Cassini mission, edited by C. T. Russell, has been published by Kluwer.
C. T. Russell has been asked to join the magnetic field investigation on the Japanese contribution to the Bepi Colombo mission to Mercury, the MMO.

The Space Physics Group is pleased to announce that R. J. Strangeway has been asked to chair the steering committee of NSF’s GEM program. C. T. Russell is pleased to announce that the SWRI proposal for the payload for NASA’s Magnetosphere Multiscale mission has been selected for further study. This payload carries a UCLA magnetometer. We regret to announce (although we are pleased for Jimmy) that J. Raeder has accepted a faculty position at the University of New Hampshire. The Space Physics Center is pleased to announce that former student John Phillips has been selected at the UCLA’s Earth and Space Sciences distinguished alumnus of 2003. The Space Physics Group is pleased to announce the successful launch of Australia’s Fedsat mission carrying a UCLA-built magnetometer. The Space Physics Center regrets to announce that after nearly 14 years continuous operation the Galileo mission has been ended with its fully functional UCLA magnetometers. The European Space Agency has selected for flight the Venus Express mission. C. T. Russell is a co-investigator on the magnetometer team. We are pleased to announce that Professor C. T. Russell has been awarded the AGU’s 2003 John Adam Fleming medal. The first of two volumes on the Cassini mission, edited by C. T. Russell, has been published by Kluwer. A volume on the Genesis Discovery mission, edited by C. T. Russell and published by Kluwer has now appeared. C. T. Russell has recently been named an Associate of the National Academy of Sciences. The Space Physics Center is pleased to announce that the Institute for Scientific Information has named C. T. Russell one of their most highly cited researchers. C. T. Russell has been awarded COSPAR’s 2002 Science award at their biennial meeting in Houston. |

The Space Physics Center is pleased to announce that H.J. Singer has been selected as the 2002 Slichter lecturer and will be in residence at UCLA for the first 2 weeks of May. The Space Physics Group is pleased to welcome Dr. Tom Takeuchi for a year long visit with us beginning April 1, 2002. C.T. Russell's Dawn Discovery Mission has been selected for flight in May 2006 orbiting Vesta in 2010 and Ceres in 2014. The Dawn website gives further details. The Space Physics Center is pleased to welcome Prof. Martin Connors from Athabasca University to spend a 3 month mini-sabbatical with us in the Winter Quarter 2002. R.J. Strangeway has been elected the Secretary of the Magnetospheres section of the AGU's Space Physics and Aeronomy section. He has the responsibility of organizing SPA activities and the Spring and Fall AGU meetings. The Space Physics Center is pleased to announce Professor M.G. Kivelson's election to the National Academy of Science. We are pleased to announce that Robert J Strangeway received the 2001 IGPP/UCLA Researcher award.
