Magnetospheric Sounding by McMAC

With a superior latitudinal coverage, McMaC is capable of monitoring the plasma density in the entire dayside magnetosphere by employing the normal-mode magnetoseismic method. The density measurements are taken at 21 L-values ranging from L = 1.3 to 10.7, corresponding to the midpoints of neighboring stations. The below figure shows these L-values as well as the expected scheme to construct the density distribution in the dayside magnetosphere.

McMaC can probe the magnetospheric density distribution by using magnetoseismic methods.

McMaC will also provide an important database of impulsive wave events to help develop the recently conceived travel-time method. The arrival time of impulses observed by McMaC will be compared with Tamao’s MHD model and with computer simulation. Different inversion techniques will also be explored for inferring the magnetospheric density distribution from the measurements of travel time.
